Meetings Specialization – Chemical Industry

The chemical industry is characterized by a broad operational diversity. It is basically divided into subsectors: chemicals production, pharmaceutical production and production of goods from rubber and plastics. These sectors interconnected due to the components produced in one of them are often used as basic intermediate products in another.

Due to a high degree of negative environmental and human health impacts, the chemical industry is subject to numerous legal regulations. In order to conduct activities related to the production and distribution of chemicals/drugs one should firstly obtain special permits and licenses. The European Union has introduced strict standards of certifying chemicals, which have a considerable influence on the shape and activities of the organization. These are, i.a. acts on chemical substances and preparations, pharmaceutical laws, substances depleting the ozone layer, or the ban on using asbestos in manufacturing.

The chemical industry generates more than a 10% share in the processing industry. The value of produce sold is more than 130 billion PLN, and is steadily increasing. The largest number of companies from this industry is located in provinces: Mazowieckie, Śląskie and Wielkopolskie. Currently there are more than 19 000 companies in the chemical industry, of which about 80% employs up to 9 employees. The main share in the industry is generated by companies involved in the production of plastic goods, employing more than 49 employees (6% of all entities). That particular sector affects other industries such as construction, food processing and agriculture.

The main difficulty for companies in the chemical industry is the need to comply with the adopted norms and standards. The ability to adjust to said norms often determines their productivity and effectiveness. It involves expenses on the proper technologies, equipment, protective measures, as well as keeping documentation consistent with the legal requirements. Upon request of controlling authorities, the company should be able to reconstruct the full flow path of raw materials and the final product at every technological stage. In addition to implemented business and industrial system tools, support in this regard is provided by various kinds of product marking methods (e.g. bar codes). Furthermore, entrepreneurs are looking for ERP, MES and SCADA solutions, which would support quality control and enable users to react to results differing from adopted standards.
